Saiyuki RELOAD

Also known as:

A twenty-five episode television series produced by Studio Pierrot in 2003 that continues the narrative arc of Gensou Genma Saiyuki.

Saiyuki RELOAD is a 25-episode television anime produced by Studio Pierrot and directed by Tetsuya Endo. It aired in Japan from October 2, 2003, to March 25, 2004, serving as a sequel to the 2000 version of Saiyuki. Adapted from the first half of Kazuya Minekura's manga Saiyuki RELOAD, the story continues the journey of the monk Tang Sanzang, Wukong, Wujing, and Bajie as they travel west toward the Tianzhu Kingdom to stop the Bull Demon King's resurrection experiments. In this new series, the four companions venture deeper into the more perilous demon territories of the West, encountering former demon generals and the mysterious organization known as "Sano-Suzu," which reveals the karmic ties and history surrounding Sun Wukong's sealing five hundred years prior. Compared to its predecessor, RELOAD focuses more on character psychology and past bonds, featuring a slower pace and a more somber art style. The story was continued in the subsequent work, Saiyuki RELOAD GUNLOCK, in 2004. Following these series, the Saiyuki anime franchise concluded in 2017 with the finale RELOAD BLAST, produced by a different studio.
