Sun Wukong (1959 Toho Version)

Also known as:
Sun Wukong Son Gokū Monkey Sun - 孫悟空 - Son Gokū - Monkey Sun - 孫悟空 - Son Gokū - Monkey Sun

A 1959 Japanese tokusatsu fantasy comedy produced by Toho and adapted from Journey to the West.

Sun Wukong (孫悟空, Son Gokū) is a 1959 color special effects fantasy comedy film produced by Toho Co., Ltd., directed by Kajirō Yamamoto, with Eiji Tsuburaya serving as the special effects supervisor. The film premiered in Japan on April 19, 1959, as a double feature with I Want to Be a Shell (私は貝になりたい). This marked the second time Kajirō Yamamoto and Eiji Tsuburaya brought Journey to the West to the screen, following their 1940 production Enoken's Sun Wukong (エノケンの孫悟空). Using a comedic approach, the plot condenses the hundred-chapter novel into key highlights: the birth of the Stone Monkey, the Havoc in Heaven and subsequent imprisonment under the Five-Elements Mountain, the recruitment of Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing during Tang Sanzang's pilgrimage, and the classic episode of borrowing the Plantain Fan while passing through the Flaming Mountain. The film extensively employs Eiji Tsuburaya's signature special effects techniques to depict flight, transformations, and the magical battles of gods and demons, making it one of the representative works of the golden age of post-war Japanese tokusatsu cinema. Although the film has never been released in the United States or provided with English subtitles, it is regarded as a pivotal work in the lineage of Journey to the West adaptations in Japan.
