Journey to the West (1993 Nippon TV 40th Anniversary Special)
A commemorative special produced by Nippon Television for its fortieth anniversary, starring Masahiro Motoki.
Journey to the West (1993, 西遊記) is a commemorative television special produced and broadcast by Nippon Television to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the network's founding. It premiered on NTV on March 28, 1993, with a runtime of approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. Directed by Shoji Kizen, the production is a generational remake of the network's own classic series Journey to the West (the Masaharu Sakai version) from 1978–1980. The lead role of Sun Wukong is played by Masahiro Motoki, whose starkly different look and performance style in interpreting the Handsome Monkey King garnered significant attention from Japanese audiences. The production crew traveled to China for on-location filming, utilizing the scenery of Dunhuang, Xinjiang, and other Silk Road landscapes to recreate the pilgrimage to the West; the scale of the visuals was an ambitious feat for Japanese dramas of that era. The plot follows the primary narrative of Tang Sanzang and his three disciples fighting demons and conquering monsters on their journey to obtain the scriptures, condensing several classic chapters into the story. As a tribute for NTV's 40th anniversary, the film not only preserved the national memory brought by the 1970s Japanese version of Journey to the West, but also set the stage for the 1994 television series starring Takiko Tokohana and Toshimi Karasawa, as well as the 2006 Fuji TV version starring Shingo Katori. It stands as a vital transitional work in the lineage of Japanese cinematic and televisual adaptations of Journey to the West.
