Princess Iron Fan
A 1966 color fantasy film directed by He Menghua and produced by Shaw Brothers, based on the legends of Journey to the West.
Princess Iron Fan is a color Mandarin fantasy musical film produced by Shaw Brothers (Hong Kong), which premiered in Hong Kong on August 9, 1966. Directed by He Menghua with a runtime of approximately 93 minutes, it is the second of four "Journey to the West" series films produced by Shaw Brothers between 1966 and 1968. Adapted from Journey to the West, the film is divided into two narrative segments: the first tells the story of Sun Wukong (played by Yue Hua) attempting three times to borrow the Plantain Fan from Princess Iron Fan (played by Ding Ning) at the Flaming Mountain and his magical duel with the Bull Demon King; the second segment connects to the Lady White Bone arc, featuring Zheng Peipei and He Lili as skeleton demon sisters who attempt to capture Tang Sanzang to eat his flesh in pursuit of immortality. Filmed entirely on panoramic sets within the Shaw studios, the movie blends traditional operatic movement, special effects photography, and musical sequences, serving as a representative work of how major Hong Kong studios brought traditional supernatural themes to the silver screen in the 1960s.
