Journey to the West II
A forty-two episode sequel to TVB's 1998 Journey to the West, featuring Dicky Cheung as Sun Wukong.
Journey to the West II is a costume fantasy drama produced by Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) and first aired on Jade channel from October to December 1998. Spanning 42 episodes, it serves as the sequel to the 1996 TVB version of Journey to the West, dramatizing the latter half of the original novel's journey to the west and the subjugation of demons. The series was directed by Fong Chun-chiu, produced by Lau Sze-yu, and written by Cheung Wah-biu. Due to contractual disputes between Dicky Cheung and TVB, the role of Sun Wukong was recast with Benny Chan, while Jiang Hua continued as Tang Sanzang, Lai Yiu-cheung played Bajie, and Mak Cheung-ching played Sha Wujing, with the primary cast largely continuing from the previous work. The series selected classic episodes such as the Heaven-Reaching River, Flaming Mountain, Webbed-Silk Cave, Lion-Camel Ridge, Biqiu Kingdom, and the Bottomless Cave, while retaining the humor and emotional arcs of its predecessor, eventually leading the master and disciples to Lingshan to obtain the True Scriptures. Following its broadcast in Hong Kong, public opinion was divided—while Benny Chan's version of Sun Wukong garnered significant market attention, the stylistic difference from Dicky Cheung's portrayal sparked much discussion. To this day, it remains an important chapter in TVB's "Journey" series.
