A thirty-episode mythological series produced by TVB in 1996, starring Dick Wei as Sun Wukong and Jiang Hua as Tang Sanzang, renowned for its signature Hong Kong humor.

Journey to the West is a 30-episode costume fantasy series produced by Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) and first aired on November 18, 1996, under the supervision of Lau Si Yu. The series stars Julian optimism as Sun Wukong, Louis Cheung as Tang Sanzang, Lai Yiu Cheung as Zhu Bajie, and Mak Cheung Ching as Sha Wujing. While based on the original framework of the novel, the show incorporates a vast amount of Hong Kong-style "mo lei tau" comedy, featuring exaggerated costumes, witty dialogue, and a brisk pace. With his mischievous and spirited performance, Julian optimism reshaped the image of Sun Wukong, becoming the irreplaceable "Monkey King" in the hearts of Hong Kong audiences. Upon its premiere, the show recorded forty viewership points, claiming the title of TVB's highest-rated series of 1996. In 1998, TVB redubbed the series into English for broadcast on Pearl Channel, making it the only Chinese drama in TVB history to receive such treatment. A sequel, Journey to the West II, was released in 1998, with Dicky Cheung taking over the role of Sun Wukong while maintaining the same worldview. The 1996 version carved out its own niche with its unique comedic style, standing in stark contrast to the 1986 CCTV version and exerting a profound influence on the image of "Sun Wukong" within Chinese popular culture.
