Wukong Gaiden
An unlicensed Chinese RPG developed by Taiwan's Gamtec for the Sega Mega Drive in 1996, later brought to English audiences by the Super Fighter Team in 2008.
Legend of Wukong (悟空外传) is a Chinese RPG developed in 1996 by Taiwan's Gamtec (Elite Computer Entertainment) for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It is one of the few unlicensed games for the Sega Genesis platform featuring Chinese themes and based on Journey to the West. The plot is a loose adaptation of Journey to the West: players control Sun Wukong as he travels through a world overrun by demons, meeting companions, collecting equipment, and advancing the story through turn-based combat. The cartridge has a capacity of 16 megabits (approximately 2MB), supports both NTSC and PAL formats, is compatible with any region's Sega Genesis, Mega Drive, or Nomad consoles, and provides three independent save slots. The game was published in Taiwan by Ming Technology Co., Ltd. and remained missing from the international market for a long time until 2008, when the American independent publisher Super Fighter Team completed an English translation and re-released it with a brand new cartridge and a 16-page color manual, priced at 40 dollars per box. It is regarded as one of the first officially commercially released English RPGs for the Sega Genesis after the console's commercial end in 1998. In 2013, it was included in the "RPG Trifecta Pack" for PC alongside Beggar Prince and Star Odyssey. Although limited in scale, the game holds a unique position in Sega collecting circles and the history of Journey to the West themed games due to its rarity, collectible value, and its status as a late-era Chinese RPG for Sega hardware.
