Launched by NetEase in 2003, this chibi-style turn-based MMORPG has garnered over 250 million registered accounts and stands as one of China's longest-running national gaming phenomena.

Fantasy Westward Journey is a Q-version 2D turn-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and operated by NetEase. It entered closed beta on November 6, 2003, launched its open beta on December 18, and transitioned to a paid subscription model on January 16, 2004. While the game utilizes the engine from Westward Journey Online II, it was reconstructed with a fresh Q-version art style and romantic, manga-style storytelling, drawing inspiration from the Hong Kong film A Chinese Odyssey. This approach quickly transformed it into a phenomenal national sensation. With a world-view rooted in Journey to the West, players create characters across 19 sects spanning the three races of Immortals, Humans, and Demons. Character progression is achieved through systems such as sect quests, main storylines, the Twenty-Eight Mansions, underground palace exploration, Five-Elements alchemy, and the cultivation of summoned pets. Players interact within a social and economic framework featuring guilds, marriage, merchant systems, and PvP arenas. The game pioneered design paradigms for Chinese online gaming that persist to this day, such as "pet refining," "double experience time," and "circular quests." Its commercial system, combined with a player-driven "Gold—Game Card—RMB" economic chain, turned the game into a long-term value-preserving "online game stock." By the mid-2010s, Fantasy Westward Journey had surpassed 250 million registered users across more than 400 servers, ranking first in Chinese MMORPG revenue for several consecutive years. It serves as NetEase's cash cow and a benchmark product for the Chinese gaming industry. In 2015, the derivative mobile version also topped the App Store bestseller charts, consolidating the IP's cross-generational vitality.
