The Monkey King (Julia Lovell Abridged Edition)
A spirited modern abridgment published by Penguin Classics in 2021, this edition revitalizes the essence of the original masterpiece for twenty-first-century readers and features a foreword by cartoonist Yang Qianlun.
The abridged translation Monkey King: A Journey to the West (2021) by British sinologist Julia Lovell is a new English version of Journey to the West tailored for 21st-century readers as part of the Penguin Classics series. Lovell significantly condensed the descriptive passages and poetry that contributed less to the narrative pace, reducing the length of the translation to approximately one-quarter of the original while recreating Sun Wukong's fantastical adventures in vivid, fluent contemporary English. The book includes a detailed introduction by Lovell and a foreword by Chinese-American cartoonist Gene Luen Yang. The translation has received widespread acclaim since its publication; historian Geoffrey Wasserstein listed it as one of the best books on Chinese themes of the year, and it has become one of the most popular English versions of Journey to the West in recent years.
