Anthony C. Yu's four-volume English translation of Journey to the West was published by the University of Chicago Press between 1977 and 1983. It is the first complete version of Journey to the West to translate all the original poetry and prose into English. Believing that these poems are essential to understanding the author's deeper meanings, the translator preserved each one, accompanying them with detailed scholarly introductions and annotations, ensuring the translation possesses both literary merit and academic reference value. In 2012, the University of Chicago Press released a revised edition, which standardized the romanization system to Hanyu Pinyin and expanded the introductions and annotations based on recent academic achievements. Anthony C. Yu is a Distinguished Service Professor of Humanities at the University of Chicago.
